Call me by your name

title sequence  2017

Type of project: typography and video making.

Challenge: create a video narrative with the help of typography to communicate the essence of a film.

typographer, video maker, post editor.
In this project, I had to re-imagine the title sequence of a film of my choice. The aim was to create a narrative using typography and video that would represent the story and atmosphere of the film.

I have chosen a film by Luca Guadagnino called “Call Me by Your Name” (2017). Set in the 80’s, Northern Italy, the story concerns a romantic relationship between a 17-year-old, Elio Perlman, and a 24-year-old archaeology graduate student, Oliver. I chose this story because I like the delicacy of the first love and the way it’s been depicted against the warm, sunny landscapes of Italy. I tried to recreate the atmosphere.

In order to convey the atmosphere, I filmed streets and landscapes of Palermo and used it as a base for my narrative. Original “Call Me by Your Name” titles were designed in a handwritten style. That inspired me and I decided to write down the names of the key production and cast. Later I made a video of my handwritten titles and put it together with the video from Palermo. The title of the film “Call Me by Your Name” was made from silicone and acrylic paint.
